On display are a table and objects from the well found at Weißensee Castle, which bear witness to the everyday life of the castle’s inhabitants in the High Middle Ages.
When the kingdom of Thuringia was divided up among his three sons after the death of King Bisinius in the 6th century, Amalaberga used the metaphor of the only partially set royal table to make it clear to her husband Herminafried that he should have sole claim to the Thuringian throne. “He who calls only half the kingdom his own may only have half the table set!” According to legend, this led to a warlike dispute that heralded the end of the legendary Thuringian kingdom.
The table parable of Amalaberga tells Thuringian history and encourages us to question our own behavior, material thinking and personal status in society. It therefore not only shows historical facts, but also illustrates modern man’s excessive striving for possessions, exaggerated recognition, wealth, success and power against reason.
