Undiscovered gem in the heart of Thuringia

A warm welcome! We are delighted that you are interested in Weißensee, a small medieval town that is closely linked to the history of Thuringia and is described in a medieval chronicle as the heart of the state.

“Hops, malt and water” – Weißensee is the city of the purity law for brewing beer, long before Munich and the site of the first state parliament in German history.

Much of the original, unique building fabric has been preserved and saved over time. This applies to Germany’s oldest town hall as well as to the Kulturkirche Peter & Paul. Weissensee/Runneburg Castle was barely saved and is currently being renovated.

You will also find a unique tourist attraction of extraordinary beauty in the old town, the Chinese “Garden of Eternal Happiness”, the largest single garden of its kind in Germany. There are also sculptures and exhibitions worth seeing.

In no other city in Germany can you experience such a concentration of unique horticultural architecture and historical integrity in such a small space. A visit is therefore worthwhile, and the necessary tourist infrastructure is available on site. Dear visitors, start your journey through the charming and historic Weißensee.

We are waiting for you.
